Joya: AiR is a landmark international, interdisciplinary arts residency grounded in the intersection of creative practice, ecological inquiry, and sustainable cultural engagement. Situated within an off‑grid, climate‑positive environment in rural Andalucía, the residency fosters an intellectually rigorous and generative context where artists, writers, and researchers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds can deepen their practice, expand critical perspectives, and engage collaboratively with ecological and cultural challenges.&#38;nbsp;

“When I first arrived at JOYA, the flowers and grasses were in full swing. A sprawling green sea over the hills, dotted with red poppies and Spanish chamomile. It rained my first evening which was great; that meant I’d be able to find the wild clay easily by searching for the cracked silky surface as the sun slowly dried everything out. I spent my first three or four days exploring the space and collecting wild clay, going out in the mornings with a bucket and a little shovel. I’d saturate what clay I’d found with the water collected from the shower (growing up on a farm I knew this trick instantly, don’t want to waste any precious water!). I’d leave that to slake for a bit before mixing and sieving it, picking out the larger rocks, stones and organic matter. I’d leave the sieved liquid clay in the big buckets for a few hours out in the sun to try help evaporate some water, before pouring it into a cotton sack to dry out for a day or so. I wasn’t particularly patient when it came to the first couple batches, I really wanted to start making!!! I eventually got this hanging clay out onto a timber board to dry out a little more in the sun before I began wedging it. I finally had enough clay to start making.
I was determined to build big during this residency, push my limits with clay with out the limitations of a kiln or having to fire at all. I was also interested in the contrasting landscapes I found my self in, these huge beautiful mountains in contrast to the tiny plants, grasses and weeds I’d be walking through every day. I was particularly inspired by all the plants with thorns and spikes, vegetation reminiscent of where I grew up in Australia. Dry landscape where all living creatures have evolved to not only survive but thrive on little to no water in the summer months. By the end of my two weeks at JOYA, I had created five thistle like clay sculptures that sat together as a macro forest, speculative characters from a future where the flora pushes its limits in order to defend them selves. JOYA is an incredibly special place, a comfortable and nurturing space to be inspired by absolutely everything nature has to offer.”

“Returning to the marble sculpting garden, Old Friends Meet Again continues as an evolving, site- responsive gathering where art, material, and atmosphere exist in quiet dialogue. Set within an active sculptural environment, the garden is not a backdrop but a living field of process. Works are placed in direct relation to this setting, in conversation with the site. This iteration shifts toward a more open format. The evening unfolds without fixed structure, allowing guests to move freely through the space, encountering works gradually and on their own terms. A yakitori bbq and tea ceremony remain present supporting the atmosphere.”

Combining handmade ceramic forms with found organic materials and discarded objects, she constructs speculative dystopic landscapes that question the hierarchy between humans and the environment, resulting in sculptures that appear at once playful, defensive and quietly uncanny.&#38;nbsp;This body of work explores the chaotic blend of natural and urban environments of large European cities, describing a future landscape where evolved flora species slowly but surely regain control of the minerals that currently stand as bricks and concrete, walls and foundations.

		<description>Australian Ceramics Triennale“Under Fire: Clay from the Western Edge”
at the Fremantle Arts Centre&#38;nbsp;

Under Fire brings together 18 Western Australian ceramic artists who embrace the elemental, transformative nature of clay. Across sculptural forms and experimental surfaces, the artists explore the line between control and chaos in their making and invoke memory, place and our changing environment.

Structured around four thematic pillars—Sustainability and Wellbeing, History and Change, Metaphor and Symbol, and Chemistry and Alchemy—the exhibition highlights ceramics as both a scientific process and a symbolic language. Spanning the diverse regions of Western Australia—from the Kimberley to the South West—Under Fire reveals how ceramic practice is rooted in both place and community. The artists come together in a spirit of shared enquiry, continuing a tradition where potters have always gathered—by movement, purpose, or geography. From ancient kilns to digital experimentation, these artists continue a material tradition that is both street-level and sacred. At its core, Under Fire honours the alchemy of ceramics: earth shaped by hand, forged in flame, and returned as something enduring, expressive, and profoundly human.

Under Fire features the work of Ian Dowling, Valerie Schönjahn, Jess Tan, Emma Vinkovic, Kathy Allam, Andrea Vinkovic, Lorraine Hunter, Jessica Jadai, Nic Kotsoglo, Jackie Masters, Beste Ogan, Cat A. Conner, Graham Hay, Fig. 2 (Annie Huang and Reegan Jackson), Bernard Kerr, Holly O’Meehan and Fleur Schell

Twelve Decades is the title of my artwork for this exhibtion. The following is my artist statment.

The purchasing of so called “Virgin Land” from the Crown in 1907 is where this twelve decade long story begins. On a piece of land traditionally belonging to the Goreng people of the Nyoongar Nation, this landscape has been slowly cleared and replaced with mass mono-cropping; introduced grain and legume species planted and harvested year in and year out, sucking up any and all nutrients from the soil. By the eighth decade, practically all of the natural flora had been cleared with the unique biodiversity endemic to the region completely destroyed, causing so much damage that any form of rehabilitation has almost become obsolete. This series of 12 vessels illustrates the lineal progression from the last 12 decades on the land, how the local natural environment has been impacted by colonial style agricultural methods directly due to the artists own familial responsibilities in imposing said methods on the land.

Not only does this series represent the physical impact the artists family has had on the land through colonial style agricultural methods, it also explores the emotional toll currently being experienced by many young Australians. The anxiety and anger being felt is far spread, fuelled by our governments lack of investment back into the environment, the people and our future. Previously O’Meehan’s work has always held an element of hope, this series however lacks the same level of optimism and begins to evoke desperation.

In keeping with the artists desire to highlight the importance of materiality when discussing environmental concerns, this series of works have been created using recycled clays. Combining left over clays with each other to continually create new and unrepeatable clays, this practice attempts to show the irony of using and irreversibly changing the material to that of ceramic which can not be utilised for vegetation growth ever again. The artworks have also undergone experimentation with vegetation ashes as glaze finishes. With a collection of ashes collected from local bushfires, to the purposeful collection and burning of weeds, the various ashes used for the glazes will also tell a story of change in the vegetation.

The fact that we have been careless with our resources and superior to all other living creatures will be more than obvious. This artwork explores the satirical idea that perhaps we need to develop products that all us to be perceived in a higher manner; what if we could trick our future selves into thinking we are better at recycling and repurposing our waste.

By appropriating natural forms in an attempt to highlight the beauty of the hidden and unassuming, and by purposely making with slow, repetitive movements, these hand built ceramic objects highlight and honour the time it takes the environment to both recover and flourish. During winter in 2024, myself and five other WA artists were invited to spend a week at the Donnelly River Village for a residency supported by Earlyworks Gallery in Souther Fremantle.&#38;nbsp;

I chose to take this opportunity to explore different materials and methods outside of my usual practice of ceramics, exploring the type of environment that often inspires me with a different mix of materials and pure play.

About the Exhibition

The contemporaneity in understanding craftsmanship in art is open-ended, with no single definitive explanation. It extends beyond questions of whether a piece qualifies as art or craft, recognising that interpretation is implicitly subjective and obsolete at this point. Instead of drawing distinctions, Lost in Translation&#38;nbsp;encourages an exploration of the diverse interpretations of ‘crafty’ artworks. This perspective invites appreciation for the subtle blend of skill, creativity, and tradition that characterises these pieces, transcending conventional categorisations and promoting a broader comprehension of artistic expression.

This exhibition considers such concepts through the works of 18 artists from the Indian Ocean region, ranging from emerging to internationally established artists. The region's rich history of cultural exchanges as a hub for trade routes has led to a distinctive blend of traditions from Africa, the Middle&#38;nbsp;East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania - which is reflected in this exhibition. Artworks shown here explicate the cultural identity and narratives of the region. As part of the ‘Indian Ocean Craft Triennial - IOTA24,’ this exhibition at ATTA Gallery in Bangkok highlights the thriving of contemporary art with craftsmanship, cultivating a deeper understanding of cultural narratives and the integrating cross-cultural translation.

Lost in Translation invites its audience to engage their own interests in exploration and interpretation with works that stimulate 'translation' in three ways: appropriation of visuals in craft, mixing materials into new interpretations, and viewing craft as a universal language. Through these themes, the exhibition explores the flexibility between art, craft, and cultural understanding, highlighting the subtle dialogues that emerge from these artworks.

The Artwork

This artwork series In search of the hidden growths I, II and III explores a speculative future of the natural vegetation endemic to the south west regions of WA. Influenced by the slow growth of the land and vegetation, O’Meehan purposely makes with slow, repetitive movements in a way that honours the time it takes the environment both recover and flourish. The symbolic use of the pearls reiterates how the natural environment skilfully sources materials and slowly but surely creates micro miracles.
